I have a sub-cutaneous lump beneath the rib cage (on the right, under the liver). It looks like a lipoma but it hurts. I also have 3 other lumps (that don't hurt) on the left side. Also, my abdomen area ( starting from right under the breasts down about 10cm is a bit thicker - not sure if it's oddly placed fat or some different density tissue).

I have seen two doctors - the first one examined the painful lump using ultrasound and said that it's spherical, well delimited, non-vascular, about 1-2cm in size. She said that she thinks that it's a lipoma but it's strange that it hurts.

The second doctor examined my liver area (just by touch, no ultrasound) - the area is all painful. She has now scheduled me for an ultrasound for the lumps and liver (as well as the whole abdominal area) and a blood panel analysis.

The ultrasound will only be in two weeks the earliest and the blood tests only in about a week so in the meanwhile I would like to find out what the most likely result will be.. I've seen that the symptomps match liver cancer as well as non-malign liver cysts. Could you please let me know what you medical opinion is? Thank you!

I should mention that I have (or had) poly-cystic ovarian syndrome so I took contraceptive pills as a treatment (including Diane-35). The lumps first appeared when I took the pills (might be coincidentally).

I am a 20 year old female.

I look forward to hearing back from you!

Brief Answer:
Does not look like liver cancer

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your query.

The lump (as per clinical and USG findings) appear totally benign to me. Lipoma or neurofibroma are possibilities. Both can be multiple but nothing needs to be done for these. Sometimes they may hurt, if located over a nerve.

For the pain in liver area, I am not sure how much pain it is. If pressed too firmly by hand, anybody can have pain. In a healthy 20 year old, pain in liver area is very unlikely to be liver cancer. Even hepatitis is very unlikely as no other symptoms are there. Liver cysts are usually not painful.

I think there is nothing serious going on. The ultrasound and blood tests will provide reassurance.

Hope I have answered your query. I will be available to answer further followup queries, if any.
