Had Unprotected Sex. Took I Pill. Periods Scanty And Having Lower Abdominal Pain. Should I Go For Pregnancy Test?

default
Posted on Sat, 3 Aug 2013
Question: Hello,
My periods have always been regular...my last regular period was on 10th May'13. It ended on 17th May'13. I had an unprotected intercourse on the 18th May'13 and took the i-pill within 2 hours on that day itself. Later my period was expected to come around 10th June'13 (usually my periods come 5-6 days early so I was expecting it to be around 4th-5th June'13)...however, It came early on 1st June'13. This time my period was scanty (unlike my normal period flow) and ended on 7th June'13. I also had severe lower abdominal pain for about 10 days after that (I usually get this pain after every period due to some ovarian cysts it seems).
But I have not got my period yet for this month July'13. It is 11th July'13 today. Should I be getting pregnancy test done? Or should I be safe?
If I am not pregnant, then how can I get back my periods...in July'13 or Aug'13? Is there any medicine for the periods to come back if not pregnant? I have never missed my periods till date...inspite of ovarian cysts which the doctors had previously said normal upon diagnosis.
I am unmarried so I am really worried! I definitely want back my regular periods ASAP. I cannot even share this with my parents, family or friends. Please advise.

Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. I have understood your current situation.

First thing, unprotected sex just after period over is very much safe and you also took i-pill within 2 hrs. Here, chance of being pregnant is almost nil literally as your previous cycle was regular. To make sure or clear confusion, you may undergo one home pregnancy test to exclude pregnancy.

Second thing, you had gotten withdrawal bleeding on 1st XXXXXXX due to effect of the I-pill and it may cause scanty period. Most women experience irregular delayed period following taking the emergency pill for next 1-2 cycles. It occurs mostly due to hormonal imbalance and mental stress.

Some other associated factors like previous ovarian cyst, irregular diet habit, weight gain or rapid loss, thyroid disturbance, certain medication, anxiety or emotional upset etc may cause delayed period. You can wait another few days before going to some basic investigations like ultrasound scan, hormone assay etc.

In absence of pregnancy, progesterone pills are usually given to induce period with other supportive treatment. For proper prescription, you need to consult with your nearest gynecologist.

Some basic guideline can help you to bring back your period:

1) Take healthy diet with low carbohydrate & more vegetables. Avoid all junk/ fast/ spicy food stuffs.

2) Do regular physical exercise to control body weight and it has key role to regularize period.

3) Try to avoid stress/ depression (it has great impact on delaying period) by yoga or meditation or deep breathing exercise (15-20 minutes) regularly.

4) Iron supplements may be needed. Drink plenty of water/ fluid and always take sound sleep.

Hope, I have answered your query. Let me know if you need clarifications or have any other query.

Wish your good health and take care yourself.

Regards,
Dr Soumen.

Thank you so much for the prompt and detailed response.

However, I believe that since the chances of my pregnancy is nil...do I still require to do a home pregnancy test? I mean do I need to think on that track? How much accurate result will I get using the Prega-news home pregnancy test kit? When should I do the test?

By when should I expect my delayed period in July or will it come in Aug (naturally and not by any medicine)?

I do practice yoga regularly. What are the specific iron supplements (any particular tablet) you suggest to bring back my periods?

Since my ovarian cysts was diagnosed in the abdominal sonography test that was done in June'13 (few weeks back)...do I still really need to again have the basic investigations done as mentioned above?

Hello,

Thanks for follow up query. Followings are my comments:

1) Though, your chance of being pregnant is almost nil, you can undergo one home pregnancy test to clear doubt. Prega news or other pregnancy testing kit usually gives more than 99% accurate result after 7 days of missed period on becoming pregnant. Preferably morning urine sample is taken for pregnancy test to get more accurate result.

2) There is no definite time span for delaying period. It is usually seen that period may be delayed for 1-2 weeks following taking emergency pill in next cycles. So, you can wait for another 5-7 days for getting period naturally after negative pregnancy test.

3) Yes, you would continue yoga with other suggestive measures for healthy life style. You can take iron XXXXXXX food stuffs like chicken liver, broccoli, spinach, egg noodles, dried apricots, wheat germ etc along with iron supplement tablets to improve general condition and bring back period.

4) If you have undergone ultrasound scan few weeks ago, then it is not necessary to repeat again. Other investigations like hormone assay, prolactin level etc may be required. You can consult with gynecologist to proceed the same and take proper prescription to bring back your period.

Hope, I have answered your queries. If you do not have other queries, you can close the discussion.

Good luck and best wishes.

Dr Soumen

Thanks Doctor!

So I understand that I can do the home pregnancy test on the 17th July'13 or after (since my period was due by the 10th July'13). This should give me accurate results. And, I should again wait for another 1 week ...say may be till 24-25th July'13 for the periods to come back naturally. Correct me if I am wrong.

If I do not get periods naturally by end of July'13...even after negative pregnancy test results done on the 17-18th July'13 or after, I should not get panic as I should be expecting my periods in Aug'13...m I correct doctor?

Hello,

Thanks for your response.

1) You can undergo one home pregnancy test by today or tomorrow as it is already 7 days past from your last menstrual period date (1st June).

After negative pregnancy test, you can wait maximum 7 days from today to get period naturally. Otherwise, you can consult with your gynecologist for proper medication to induce your period.

2) With negative pregnancy test, if you do not get your natural period within next 7 days, you must consult with your gynecologist for clinical examination and proper prescription to bring back your period. You may require progesterone pill to induce period.

Hope, it clears all confusion. You should not be worried or panic regarding this.

Be well and stay healthy.

Thanks!

Could you please help me in getting in touch with a good gynecologist in Pune as I am not very much aware of the same(this is the first time I am facing this issue)...in case I do not get back my period naturally by 20th-25th July'13 and have to get it induced through pills.

I hope my periods come normally in Aug'13 , as well.

Thank you so much for your patience.
