default
Posted on Wed, 24 Jul 2013
Question: My mother is on trach. She was at an acute care facility to wean from breathing machine. Success!
How are people weaned from trach and are there specialists? She has had secretions. I hear there is a patch?
Does it work?

Hi,

Thanks for your query.

Hopefully you mean tracheostomy, this is usually an emergency procedure to make an opening in trachea so that breathing process is restored.

Usually the opening will close spontaneously if not it may require surgical closure.

A patch may be useful.

Usually ENT specialist will help.
If any more clarification please do not hesitate to ask.

With good wishes,
Dr Chowhan
