Question: My wife had a fever about 6 days ago that lasted 2-3 days--especially in the afternoon. The fever went away but about 3 days ago her hips started to hurt. Over the last 24 hours, they have been consistently aching:deep pain from hips to ankles on both legs. What do you think our best course of action is and what can we expect to happen now?

Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

It is looking like an viral illness with involvement of muscle groups of lower limbs.

This type of picture is common in viral fevers.

Provide her adequate bed rest.

Maintain her hydration by giving plenty of oral fluids.

For pain you can give her Tylenol in prescribed dose every 8th hourly depending on the presence of pain.

If the pain is moderate to severe, you can give Advil in prescribed dose with food.

Watch for any swelling, redness, and tenderness of the joints of limbs. If they present consult the doctor for physical examination.

This type of lower limb pains associated with viral fevers subside within 2 to 3 days with rest, hydration maintenance, and analgesics.

If the pain is persisting, limping or joints swellings or redness is present, then consult the physician for physical examination and for further management.

Hope I have answered your query, if you have any clarification please let me know.

Wish you and your wife good health.

Regards.

This is what we expected. Do you know what type of virus is usually associated with these kinds of manifestations? We will see our physician if necessary, but have hope the virus will just run its course. Your prompt reply and instruction is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your consultation tonight.

Hi,

Thank you for getting back.

There are many viruses which will present with this type of fever with leg pains.

It is very difficult to attribute these symptoms to a specific virus.

But if a particular virus is spreading or circulating in your locality depending on the notification of health authority, then we will know the specific type of virus.

Most of the viral illnesses will run their course with complete recovery without any specific medication for virus.

All is required is supportive treatment with rest, hydration, and analgesics for pain.

Thank you very much for your kind appreciation.

Wish your wife a speedy recovery.

Best regards.
