What Causes Red Splotchy Area Between Thumb And Point Finger?

Posted on Thu, 9 Jun 2016
Question: HI my 19 year old daughter is at the ER in harrsionburg va and she has been suffering with what we thought was a deep tissue bruise between thumb and pointer finger from playing in cold and bat jammed into hand hard from fastpitched ball hitting close to handle . She also has history of thoraccic outlet surgery and multi directional shoulder surgery and her feet and hands sweat alot and cold weather makes the right one swell and they sometime tingle and turn light blue and she is a fastpitch softball player for her club team in college . So we had been treating it with ibuprophen and ice and epsom salt baths and trying to keep it elevated as much as possible and was doing better but tonight it turned red and splotchy and was hot to touch again and a few weeks ago she had a bad upper respitory infection and sinus infection and was treated with 7 days of levequin and predizone i am 2 and half hours a way and she had xrays done on it and they were clean no fractures or breaks but now they are saying they THINK it is Cellulitis and they are suppose to taking blood is there anything else that could be going on ???

Brief Answer:
Looks like cellulitis only.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,

Thank you for posting your query on HCM.

Well looking into your problem I would like to tell you that I agree that it could be cellulitis , the way you are describing and it should be dealt urgently because it will be closed space infection so can be dangerous if not properly dealt . Only other thing could be raynauds phenomenon but it subsides within an hour or less and is not persistent . Let them take blood for cultures its required .

Take care.
