Does White Looking Nail Indicate Serious Liver Problem?

Posted on Fri, 20 Feb 2015
Question: Doctor,

My nails are looking slightly white compare to others, and one of my friend told me that it could be because of serious liver problems, unfortunately I was diagnosed with mild infiltration of fatty liver and I believe that I am slowly recovering because my last lft blood test was very close to normal values.is this nails are normal or do I need to go for further diagnostics?

Brief Answer:
Terry's Nails

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.

To me your nails look normal only.
May be they are slightly pale in the lower half.
Terry's nail is a possibility.
It is a condition in which the blood supply of the nail bed is decreased. Some of the causes are cirrhosis, diabetes, kidney failure, iron deficiency anemia, poor nutrition.
Your liver function numbers including that of albumin looks absolutely fine. That rules out cirrhosis and poor nutrition.

You can check your hemoglobin, blood glucose, urea and creatinine.

But as I said earlier your nails look absolutely fine to me.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.

Thanks a lot doctor, just 2 additional doubts :

1) I am having some mild discomfort / dull pain on my liver area ( under bottom right ribs and back) after having alchahol - I have reduced drastically the alchahol intake after diagonosed with mild infiltration of fatty liver 10 months ago, may be once in a month - what could be the reason ?

2) do I need to have regular ultra sound scans to monitor the liver recovery or monitoring the LFT is good enough ?

Brief Answer:
Gastritis

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me with more questions.

1. The discomfort you have after drinking alcohol could be due to gastritis. You can take Neksium and Syrup Mucaine for relief.

2. You can get a repeat ultrasound scan of the abdomen and the liver function test after 3 months to assess the status of your liver. You need to quit drinking alcohol for complete recovery.

Dr.R.K

Just to control my mind and for good sleep, I can almost confirm that my liver is recovering to normal , if my LFT test results are falling with in the normal range, am I right doctor ?
