Does Vaporizer Affect The Vocal Cords?

default
Posted on Thu, 10 Sep 2015
Question: I am an opera singer well off into my college years. My voice is currently working very well but I am nervous about a problem. I have clinical anxiety and so to counter this I have tried many medications in the past the best being strangely medical Cannabis. I have gotten a medical cannabis card. I do not abuse the cannabis but do use the edible products to help my panic attacks- it works wonderfully but takes to long to kick in. So, I also have a dry vaporizer pen. This is my concern, there is little research on the effects of vapor on the cords. Obviously smoking is terrible for your cords. Vapor is not smoke however- rather hot air with the aroma of the herb in it. Will I see inflammation with use of this vapor? Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Inhaled vaporizer can also affect the vocal cords.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX Hi
Good morning!

I appreciate your concern for the safety of Medical cannabis vaporizer on the vocal cords as compared to its smoking.

Irrespective of how it is inhaled, every inhaled agent has an ability to damage the vocal cord and hence the voice.

However, as compared to smoking the drug is not burnt in case of vaporizer hence fewer toxins are produced. Thus the use of vaporizer has a lower risk to damage the vocal cord as seen with smoking cannabis.

The vocal cords are least likely to be affected if the medical cannabis is consumed rather than inhaled. However there is a higher risk of drug overdose with this method.

Thank you for your response! I have read something similar online- but it helps to hear a professional opinion. Have you heard of or seen any patients that have developed any inflammation from the vapor (pre-nodules, nodules, polyps, laryngitis...ect)? I havent seen any scopes online that show inflammation after a using a vapor pen.

Thank you again!

I have not seen any such case.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX Hi
Good morning!
Thanks for your reply.

There is a scientific evidence of the possibility of the vapors causing inflammation of the vocal cords and hence hoarseness of voice, etc.
