Does Putting Rectal Dispository Into Vagina Damage The Vagina?

default
Posted on Sat, 5 Jul 2014
Question: Hi, my daughter is 9-month old, weight 8kg, she developed fever in the middle of the night 38.8 degree C and I accidentally put the fever rectal dispository into her vagina, paracetamol 150mg for child weight from 8-16kg, so I assumed that the medicine won't be absorbed into the body so I put another one into her rectal to reduce her fever. What should I do now? Will it damage her vagina? Will she be ok? After that she got back to sleep soundly.

Just like rectal mucosa, vaginal mucosa can also absorb drugs into circulation. Anyhow, two 150 mg suppositories of paracetamol are not a too high dosage for a 9 month infant. It is unlikely to cause any adverse reaction on vaginal mucosa. You can just watch for any itching or discharge and report accordingly.
If the fever persist, she will need antibiotics too.Your doctor will guide in this.meanwhile, give frequent breast feeds.Be careful to avoid such mishaps in future.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have further questions, I will be happy to help.
Wishing for a faster cure, thank you.
