Does Missing The First Pill Of Yasminelle Increase Chance Of Getting Pregnant?

default
Posted on Mon, 26 May 2014
Question: Hello,

I have been on Yasminelle for nearly 6 months now. I have taken to it very well. I would refer to myself as a nearly perfect user. I don't miss pills. I have an alarm and take my pill between 11pm and 11.15pm each night.

On Saturday I had finished my 7 day break. I was supposed to start a new strip that night at my usual time. Somehow, I just completely forgot. I woke up the next morning and took the missed pill straight away at around 10.20 am. I then took Sunday nights pill as normal etc etc.

I read the instructions on the Yasminelle box and it said a missed pill is one taken more than 12 hours late. I had missed my pill by less than that so felt confident enough to carry on with my pills and my sex life as normal.

However, I started reading online and it seems to suggest that missing the first pill is the worst scenario for pregnancy. I can't help but feel anxious and wonder if I should have used condoms just in case. I live with my partner and we were intimate twice on Monday (yesterday).

I spoke to a pharmacist and he said you can never know but he would be confident enough that it would be ok. He didn't suggest the morning after pill. I am just wondering what you think? Would you tell your female patient she is covered or do you think she should proceed with an emergency contraception?

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
as pill taken within 12 hours the risk is less

Detailed Answer:
Dear member,
Thanks for writing to healthcare magic.

Your anxiety is valid. As you mentioned that you have taken the pill within 12 hours and the next pill as usual your chance of pregnancy is less.
The risk increases when patients remember only after one day and has to take two pills the next night in which case they would have missed pill for 24 hours.
As you have taken the pill immediately I feel there is no need for emergency contraception .after taking the pill for continuous 7 days you can resume unprotected intercourse.
After the pill pack is completed if you don't get period within 7 days please do a pregnancy test .
Thanks
