Does Hypothyroidism Cause Depression, Weight Gain And Anxiety?

default
Posted on Wed, 21 Oct 2015
Question: My wife (37) was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism after pregnancy and been on medication (Levothyroxine varying doses 25mcg-75mcg-50mcg). Sometimes, she misses the medication, and as husband, I have been noticing several mood disorders in her (weight loss, fatigue, sleepy, mood swings, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, aggression etc.) ever since that was struggling to cope up. She doesn't work and I am the one supporting the family.

I would like to get expert medical advice (via email/letter or fax on Doctor's letter pad with contact details) from an Endocrinologist in this regard to produce as legal proof. If these symptoms are typical with hypothyroid patients (when they are on/off medication), please let me know and help me with a general report. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Limitations of online consultations.

Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern.
Hypothyroidism can cause depression, mood swings, weight gain and tiredness. However, it is not typical of hypothyroidism to cause agression, panic attacks or weight loss. These may indicate another illness or even due to a primary psychiatric disorder. Post partum deprssion is another possibility.

It is better to meet an endocrinologist and a psychiatrist in person. It is not legal ( not valid as well) to issue any kind of prescription via email or fax without examining or investigating the patient . Sincere apologies. Please meet a doctor in person.

Binu
