Posted on Wed, 1 Apr 2015
Question: I kissed a person who is infected hsv 2, the very next day I started to have mouth sores, very painful inside of mouth, under the tongue, gums. I had mouth full of sores, and took blood test on the 4th day after the kissing. Test came back negative of HSV 1 or 2. Can some one have active infection, and still have negative result on blood test?

Brief Answer:
Yes , it nay be possible

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question .I am Dr Matin ,and will be answering your question.
I guess you are talking about false negative cases.
Yes indeed , False-negative (testing negative when herpes infection is actually present) results can occur if tests are done in the early stages of infection.
Cell culture or PCR test may give a false-negative result too if the sores have begun healing or if you are recently infected.
Though negative blood tests or cultures may be correct, but they can also be wrong. It’s possible for someone to get a false negative blood test result or a false negative culture result. It’s best to wait at least three months before getting a blood test. For a culture, it’s best to get to the doctor as soon as possible before symptoms start to heal.

Thank You Dr. K for your reply. I understand there is possibility of false negative result. I was wondering if some one have active infection very next day, testing blood in day 3 to 4, ( with many sores in mouth), does body produce Ig quick enough to be detected? I guess my question was if body makes Ig quick enough to be detected in the blood IF THERE IS ACTIVE SORE present for the first time. Active sore in mouth, body should be producing Ig isnt it? not one or two sore, many mouth full of sores... blood was drawn 3 days after the sore appered

Brief Answer:
The basics first...

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question.
The basics first.
It is not IgG,which is produced first (acute atate ) ,rather Ig M ,which is produced first in reaction to any antigen

2nd .It can't be predicted as to when , though enough antibodies would be formed for a positive test .
Hope it helps.
