Does Amoebiasis Cause High ALT Level?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Sep 2014
Question: I'm suffering from amoebiasis and my ALT comes out today is 80 after blood test. Is it sign of worry?
I had unprotected sex 15 weeks before and I had Hep B test done after 8 weeks ( antibody, core antigen and surface antigen) and it comes out negative.
Is it 100% accurate result?
Does my ALT is high because of amoebiasis or there are chances of Hepatitis?

Brief Answer:
No sign to worry...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Your ALT resulted high most probably due to anti-protozoa drugs you have been taking. As long as hepatitis tests resulted negative, then, should not to be worried.

The tests you performed have high accuracy.

Other causes to increased ALT include: drinking alcohol, fatty liver, or diabetes and obesity.

I had flagyl 500mg for days and stop taking it about 2 weeks.
My doctor said normal ALT is 72 and your is 80 and I'm not worried because of this. He said that during Hep B it goes upto 1000.
Do I need to go for Hep B again?
Because of window period.
My doctor said I don't need to go for again, it is 100% correct.

Brief Answer:
Nothing worrisome...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Flagyl is good choice to treat amoebiasis, mean that it is localized in the colon only.

I do not see anything worrisome in your ALT results. I do not think you should run another hep.B test as long as the ones you did have high accuracy rate.

All the best!

I have been prescribed 500mg for 10 days (3xday) and now after 2 weeks 750mg for 10 days( 3 x day). But it's not helpful and it's not improving.
Is it normal that flagyl won't effective in entamoeba histolytica?

Brief Answer:
Tests reports are needed...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Flagyl is effective for colonic amoebiasis and for trophozoides. It is not effective for intraluminal amebiasis, neither for cysts.

I advise to add paromomycin treatment to eradicate amebiasis.

As per symptoms not being improving, can you please describe:
- your actual symptoms?
- can you upload the test reports, so I can analyze them further myself?

Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Following advice...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Ok, then, if this is the point, I advise to discuss with your doctor to start paromomycin.

Colonoscopy is necessary to evaluate the changes on the colon mucosa.

Iron, folic acid, vit.B12/B6, vit.A supplementation are advised.

Should increase water intake with oral rehydration salt to replace lost fluids/electrolytes.

Probiotics are necessary to optimize intestinal flora.

At the end, it is necessary to discuss with your doctor about this.

Wish fast recovery!
