Does Zyrtec Affect Menstruation?

default
Posted on Tue, 16 Dec 2014
Question: I have been taking Zyrtec for a couple of months, not everyday, but almost. (10 mg gel tab). Instead of a regular menstual period, I had small amount of spotting for approximately 5 days. (very small amounts). I have never had this before, and I am 36. There is no possibility of pregnancy, in my case. Could this change be caused by the use of the antihistimine, or should I discontinue Zyrtec and follow up with my Dr. I just became concerned about either early menopause or some type of uterine problem, (cancer?)
Again, I have never had any problem like this before, but this is the first time in my life taking an antihistime consistently.

Brief Answer:
Cetirizine is not the cause.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

There is no conclusive data to suggest that cetirizine affects the menstrual cycles.
Cetirizine can be used anytime to treat allergies without affecting your monthly cycles.

Chances of Uterine cancer are more in older ladies above the age of 60 presenting with abnormal vaginal bleeding.

Early menopause cant be diagnosed based on a single menstrual cycle change. Clinical correlation is needed before workup for menopause is considered. Menopause diagnosis can be made by serial identification of elevated gonadotropins.

In all, though your symptoms are not exactly normal but they in no way constitutes a disease and do not need immediate medical attention. You may get an appointment fixed with your gynecologist to guide you further.

wishing you best of health

thanks
