Does Warfarin Intake Cause Nose Bleeding?

default
Posted on Tue, 8 Jul 2014
Question: I have been taking 5mg./per day of warfarin for several weeks. On occasion I get nose bleeds - woke-up with one this morning, a 1" bloody piece of mucus. I stuffed
my nostril (after blowing nose) with small wads of Kleenex but after 3 hours have just about stopped the bleeding.

Question: Is there a warfarin connection? Would nose spray phenylephrine HCI
help give relief?

Brief Answer:
Detail follows.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Friend.
Welcome to HCM.
Yes warfarin can be connected. Actually warfarin is an anti coagulant. So it makes the blood thin. So if it gets in excessive amount it can cause bleeding from any site of the body including the nose.
So I would advice you following:
1. To get PT/INR done. This would tell you that is your dose high or not.
If INR comes high then dose would be adjusted according to the primary condition.

2. To clean your nose softly. Never blow it harshly. Instead of using the by me phi define, try Saline Nasal Drops.
You can put 2 drops in each nostril before you sleep.
You have to follow this even if your INR is high.

3. In case you are taking any anti platelet drug like Aspirin, that can also cause Nasal bleed.

So get PT/INR and review with me with details of your primary condition for which you are taking warfarin.
If you have any further query please ask me.

my cardiologist prescribed the warfarin for regulating my blood. I get INR test next Wednesday XXXXXXX 25. Cardiologist
took me off aspirin last November. I've been contemplating
lowering my warfarin dosage from 5MG. to 4mg. until my next INR test on XXXXXXX 25. My last INR test showed 2.2; my
doctor lowere me from 6mg. to 4mg.

What do you think?Sorry, she lowered me from 6mg. to 5mg. I'm contemplating
taking 4mg. to XXXXXXX 25.

Dear Friend.
Value of INR is based on for what cardiac conditions you have been prescribed that.
Usually the target INR is between 2-3. Si if your INR is 2.2 on 5mg warfarin you should continue with that.
Since you had a nasal bleed so you don't need to wait for the date of INR testing. You can get it tested earlier under emergency considerations.

Till you get it tested. Don't modify the dose.
Follow instructions about nasal stuffiness that I have advised in my last answer.
Also I hope you know that while on warfarin you should avoid eating green leafy vegetables for its better action.
If you have any further query please ask me else close the discussion and rate it.
Stay Healthy.
