Does UTI Cause Ventricle Enlargement In Brain?

Posted on Wed, 2 Sep 2015
Question: does UTI cause ventricle enlargement in brain? My son who is 5 month old had a urinary tract infection 40 days ago. A CT scan done a week before UTI did not show any abnormalities in brain. An MRI done 40 days after UTI showed mildly enlarged ventricles. I want to know if UTI causes ventricle enlargement? If yes, how long after antibiotics does it resolve?

Brief Answer:
UTI should not be the cause of ventricular enlargement.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

UTI (urinary tract infection) should not be the cause of ventricular enlargement.
Some other causes can be-
1)seizures
2)perinatal brain injury
3)brain infection
4)kernicterus

Is your baby having any other history except UTI?Any history of sezure?Loss of consciousness?

Further,it will be good if you can upload that MRI CD on google drive and share the link here in follow up question.Alternatively, just click good quality pictures of MRI films and upload here. That will help me better to understand the severity of situation.

Waiting for your follow up question.

Any other infection could have caused enlarged ventricles? The only thing changed since CT was we gave him unpasteurized butter (got from India). He didn't get fever or any other symptoms. i just want to rule out any infection causes and if giving him butter caused any infection. Can infection happen without ant symptoms?
And no history of seizures.

Brief Answer:
Brain infections like encephalitis and meningitis can cause the same.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for being in follow-up.

Brain infections like encephalitis and meningitis can cause enlarged ventricles.

If he did not have any symptoms of brain infection,it is obvious that he did not have one as brain infections manifest with typical symptoms and signs.

Any subtle infection apart from this, should not be the cause.Unpasteurized butter consumption should not cause this, either.

If you can upload his MRI film/CD,I shall be in a better position to give advice.

Hope that I have answered your query for now.If you want to ask further questions,I shall be glad to answer else please close the thread, rate it and write a review as your rating will be of help to me.
