default
Posted on Sat, 25 Apr 2015
Question: Hi,
I am on Keppra 1500 mg, Klonopin 2mg, Lexapro 60 mg and Zyprexa 5 mg. My psychiatrist decided to give me Zyprexa instead of Solian (Amisulpride), and i have some problems of quick weight gain. I would like to stop this weght gain (i have to say that my glucose levels are normal) and to know if Sennosides or Metformin can help, since i have also some constipation,
Thanks beforehand XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Weight gain risk is more with Olanzapine but can be limited by exercise

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. If we consider both these medicines then both are known to cause weight gain but the risk of weight gain is relatively less with Amisulpridies or Solian than Zyprexa. Olanzapine is known to cause serious weight gain in some patients, but the drug has good efficacy than Amisulpiride. Sennosides are used as laxative drugs basically and these drugs should not be used for weight loss especially in patients with weight gain due to Olanzapine.

Best thing to result in weight loss is to exercise daily and to follow dietary adjustments like high protein diet and low refined carbs and fats diet. This will help to reduce the weight. Drugs like Topiramate can help to loose weight and will also result in mood stabilisation. So you can discuss with your psychiatrist and can ask about prescription of Topiramate for weight loss.

Thanks. I hope this helps you. Please ask again for more doubts.
