Question: sir i am 40 year male and i took prothiaden 75mg a year later tapered to 50 mg that was continued for a year and then right now I am on 25mg for 2 years. Sir mental health is very much improved and i am planning to have a baby now.

Brief Answer:
It has no harmful effect on the growing fetus (unborn child)

Detailed Answer:
Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concern regarding the safety of Prothiaden.

Prothiaden (Dothiepin) is a tricyclic antidepressant used to treat depression & it also helps to reduce the feelings of anxiety.

Glad to know that you have noticed improvement over a period of 2 years after tapering the dose of Prothiaden.

It has no harmful effects or adverse reaction on the fetus (unborn child) if your wife conceives (becomes pregnant).

Hope this answers your query.

Thanks a lot Dr. XXXXXXX Taher XXXXXXX !

Your answer was really helpful to me for taking a important decision.

Further more I would like know the better ways of tapering the Prothiaden drug from 25mg.

As far I searched and asked the psychiatrist also about the availability of less mg tablet of prothiaden. The only least available mg of prothiaden is 25mg. So what is the better ways and steps to tapper the prothiaden tablet from 25mg.

I want to stop this tablet as early as possible, but with least possible side effects of withdrawal.

Kindly guide me Doctor

Brief Answer:
The dose should be gradually tapered and stopped.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX XXXXXXX Hi
Good evening.
Thanks for your reply & the compliments.
If the antidepressants like Prothiaden is discontinued suddenly, withdrawal phenomenon ("discontinuation syndrome") in the form of dizziness, headache, chills, palpitation or anxiety can occur.
To prevent this syndrome, the dose of drugs like Prothiaden has to be gradually tapered (reduced) over several months or weeks to have a smooth recovery.

Since the dose of Prothiaden has been successfully tapered over 2-3 years from 75 mg to present 25 mg, further reducing the dose to 12.5 mg (half tablet, if possible) or an alternate day therapy for 4-6 months is advised.

In this regard I would advise you to consult your psychiatrist, under his supervision further reduction of the dose can be achieved.

Hope this helps you in getting rid of Prothiaden.
Best regards.
