Question: Hello Doc, First of all thank you for taking my query. I have few concerns about some of the prescribed medicines by doctor. Doctor prescribed me Primolute N without knowing that I was already pregnant for around 5 to 6 weeks as the cassette test came out negative. Following I took the tablets for 5 days (10 tablets) before coming to know about my pregnancy through cassette test again this time. Later scan was prescribed and fetus was found to be normal as per 6 weeks tenure. Now the doctor has prescribed Seacure 200mg (to be taken orally) for 60 days (120 tablets). I'm concerned about my pregnancy having taken Primolute N and now doctor prescribing Seacure vaginal tablets. Pls help with you advice to ensure healthy pregnancy. Many thanks!

Brief Answer:
Regular antenatal checkups, ultrasound examination

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the query.
Primulot n belongs to category D drugs in pregnancy according to FDA.
Means according to studies this may affect the fetus.
But as you used the tablets only for limited period in early weeks of pregnancy, there may not be any major problem.
Seacure tablets contains hydroxyprogesterone caproate.
It belongs to category B drugs in pregnancy.
Means according to animal studies no adverse effects on fetus reported.
So, you can use them as advised by your doctor.
Regular antenatal checkups and ultrasound examination at 11 weeks and TIFFA scan at around 20 weeks are necessary to rule out anomalies and to monitor the well being of the baby.

Hope I have answered your question. I will be available to answer followup queries. If you are satisfied with the response, please give your review at the end of the discussion.
Take care.

Thank you doctor for your reply. Can any possible anomaly due to Primolut N be diagnosed at an early stage (6 to 8 months)? Tests so far are all normal and only diagnosis was that it could be a late pregnancy as earlier twice cassette tests came out negative while later scan confirmed 6 weeks pregnancy. Confirming pregnancy after almost 6 weeks especially after taking Primolut N due to doctor suspecting cyst in ovary without having any tests conducted has really made us thinking what should be the next step. Cannot take a chance with health and overall growth of the baby so just want to be sure. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
No need to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
The risk of having side effects on fetus with primulot n in early weeks of pregnancy is less.
Rarely it may cause masculization of female fetus when taken in later weeks of pregnancy but in early weeks this problem may not arise.
Sometimes urine pregnancy test kit may not detect early pregnancy, that can be one cause for your delayed diagnosis of pregnancy.
Your other reports are normal.
You can continue the pregnancy with regular checkups. Hopefully there may not be any problem.
Take care.

Hi Doc, Thank you for your cordial response!

One last concern we had was that I was inside a CT scan room with my husband before starting of the test and after the test was over for him. Can this be of any concern and could there be any possible exposure to radiation while I was in the room before and after the test and out of the room in the adjacent monitoring and observation area while the test was running? We were not aware of my pregnancy while this happened. Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Risk is low

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Usually before and after the procedure there may not be any radiation exposure.
Before starting the procedure the attendants will be advised to come out of the room.
There will not be any radiation exposure in adjacent observation area.
So the possibility of exposure to radiation is less in your case.
Better to take regular antenatal checkups and ultrasound examinations to monitor the growth and well being of the baby.
Take care.
