Does Orofer XT Contain Folic Acid?

default
Posted on Wed, 20 Sep 2017
Question: I am 63 years of age, 50kg of weight, and have been taking orofer xt syrup(about 7.5 ml a day, equivalent to 50 mmg) for the last 10 years. Although my weight is very less, I walk for nearly 7-8 Kms. a day and try to keep myself working. I think orofer xt syrup does not contain folic acid. Moreover, the syrup blackens the tongue and creates stains on teeth. So, I want to take orofer xt tablets instead of syrup. But, the tablet comes with 100mmg formulation which is a heavy dose for me.

Kindly, clarify the following.

1) Which is better, syrup or tablet. Tablet seems to be heavy or is it my feeling?
2) Does syrup contain folic acid?
3) Are tablets available in the range of 30mmg to 50 mmg formulations?

Thanking you,

Brief Answer:
Orofet Xt contains both iron and folic acid.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Dr XXXXXXX
Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.

Orofer XT preparation contains both iron and folic acid.
Iron supplements have side effects like discoloration of tongue and staining of teeth.
These side effects will be present with iron tables also but staining will be less intense as compared to syrup.
In addition, as you have mentioned that you are taking syrup from last 10 years.
For this I would suggest you to get complete hemogram, peripheral blood examination and iron profile (iron, TIBC, % saturation and ferritin).
Iron supplements need to be taken if there is iron deficiency in body and 10 years is a long time for deficiency to be over.
In case, iron deficiency still persists then underlying cause of iron deficiency needs to be looked for.
Since, iron overload can be harmful for body, the iron status needs to be monitored before continuing further iron supplements.

If you have more queries, I will be glad to answer.

Thanks and take care

Dear Dr. Puri,

Thank you for your advice.

The packing of orofer xt syrup does not mention folic acid contents while the tablet packing does. Therefore, I have an apprehension that the syrup packing is without folic acid. How can I confirm it with documentary proof?
