Does I Pill Usage Have Effect On Future Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Apr 2014
Question: Dear Dr.Nirja, I ve had unprotected sex with my boyfriend thrice in a month and I ve taken an I pill within 24 hours at all 3 occasions(within 23 days). This is the first time I ve had a pill thrice in am month and am scared abut the consequences. I understand that the Pill should be used sparingly and we should practice safe sex. This month was an exception though and now I ve gt myself wound up about the possible consequences of taking a Pill thrice or even taking an Ipill in the first place. Will it affect my chances of future pregnancy?

Brief Answer: USE SPARINGLY, WILL NOT AFFECT PREGNANCY IN FUTURE Detailed Answer: Hello Thanks for trusting us with your health concern. I am Dr. Abraham, OB - GYN Specialist, and would be happy to guide you with your concern. The I pill should definitely be used sparingly. When taken repeatedly and casually , it loses its efficacy, and messes up your normal menstrual cycle. There are no long term consequences, just expect your cycles to be irregular and unpredictable for a month or two. It is best to switch to a regular contraceptive in future. No, it will not affect your chances of a future conception. All the best PLease feel free to discuss further.

Is it true?

Brief Answer: EXPLAINED IN DETAIL BELOW Detailed Answer: Hello again Thank you for the appreciation. There are certain tests which can ascertain aspects of your fertility. The ONLY definite proof of fertility is obviously a pregnancy. Certain investigations can reassure you that nothing is wrong, however there is an entity called ' unexplained infertility ' wherein all tests are normal, but the couple cannot conceive. You can go for an internal gynecological check up ( per vaginum and per speculum ) and a pelvic ultrasound scan which will tell you that the uterus, tubes and both ovaries are normal. Next, semen analysis of the male matters. Also, a cycle of follicular monitoring will check your ovulation. HSG checks patency of fallopian tubes. You can go for a gynec exam and a scan, plus hormonal levels - FSH, LH, TSH, Prolactin, OGTT. That much is enough. HSG/ laparoscopy can wait if you fail to conceive for a year or so after marriage. Yes, in a female, fertility is age dependent. Males continue to produce sperms till the 7th or 8th decade of life, but females are born with a fixed limited number of eggs. Each month during menstruation, they get used up. Hence, with age, the ovarian reserve ( capacity to produce good eggs declines ) and after 30, this falls drastically. Yes, that is why, conception before 35 is optimum, good number of eggs and good quality of eggs are produced , thereby reducing risks of infertility, chromosomally abnormal children etc. Hope the answer helped you.
