Does Florastor Cause Abdominal Cramps And Diarrhea?

Question: I started taking Florastor yesterday and have taken a total of two capsules so far. I have been so bloated and gassy. I now have stomach cramps and loose stools. Is this because I just began taking them and these symptoms will go away or should I discontinue use? I have to start taking Clindamycin due to a tooth infection so I began taking Florastor to reduce my risk of C Diff. This seems as though it could make things worse.

I appreciate your concern

You should stop the probiotics i.e florastor. Yes, clindamycin can lead to pseudomembranous colitis , c difficile overgrowth but probiotics haven't been shown to decrease its risk with prior therapy. In addition, if the drug affected you with such side effects then it should be avoided altogether. After completing the clindamycin, you can try yogurt and gutcare or enflor containing enterogermina and lactobacillus probiotics.

Thank you! Should I wait until tomorrow to begin the Clindamycin to allow my GI system a break since the Florastor was so hard on it?

Yes, you can wait up to 24 hours. If the symptoms still persist a PPI like esomeprazole can be advised along with isotonic fluids to help minimize the adverse effects.
