Do Light Pinkish Spotting After Bowel Movement Indicate Anal Fissure?

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Apr 2015
Question: A few weeks ago I had a light pink spot on the toilet paper after a bowel movement. It cleared up.
Today it has come back again. My anus feels a bit sore for about an hour after the movement. I think I strained to have the bowel movement. Does this sound as if I have an anal fissure please?

Brief Answer:
Fissure or hemorrhoids can be the case.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Such symptom can be caused by anal fissure indeed. However it is also possible that hemorrhoids can give such symptoms, especially if inflammation or blood clot are present.
Fissure usually gives strong pain in the moment when the stool passes anus. Trace of blood can be present. Hemorrhoids can also give pain, but it is less intense.

As you are over 50, such symptom can be also caused by some large intestine issue including polyp or even a cancer.

Here is what you should do:
- start fiber and probiotic intake
- do not push hard on stool
- have sitz baths with Oak Bark twice a day for 7 days
- have OTC suppositories for hemorrhoids twice a day for 7 days
- wash your rectum after every stool

If this wont help in a week or so, please consult proctologist and consider colonoscopy.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
