Do Ferritin And CRP Levels Go Down During Infections?

default
Posted on Fri, 9 May 2014
Question: Dear Sir, I'm a healthy person who sports 4-5 times a week and eat very healthy. Lots of fish and chicken and less meat. 4 years ago I have had a blood test and came out that I had a high gamma gt (80 and normal was 50 as stated) and this was due to my diet and alcohol consumption as well as light smoking. I was referred to an ultrasound and it came out that I had a light / mild fatty liver. Also my cholesterol was high. so I decided to change my life style, so I started work outs and running for 4-5 times a week. I lost 10 kg and became 75 kg from 85 (I am 171 cm tall) and all values came normal since then. My cholesterol, lever .. etc.. I check blood every year and for this year something weird came out ( at least I think weird) My ferritin (I dont know if this was ever checked by a test) is 324 while it's stating 17-230 for men.. My hb is 8.4 while it had to be minimum of 8.5 (but maybe this is because I sport too much). I am suffering now 3 weeks of a mild cough and lots of stress. the stress and cough are becoming better now. Also I have eczema and nail fungal infection on foot. ( just for information to help you giving your opinion). so if this high Ferritin was from this condition, would go up quickly and then drop down slowly? I will attach my report as all other test came out normal. Crp, lever values, thyroid, Glucose ...etc.. all came normal. Do I have to worry much about this value of ferritin? I have my fears and scares for this now. Note that there is no known family history (father, mother) history of hemochromatosis in the family. If you have any question please let me know. Some additional information: back in 2010 was my ferritin 257 and my HB was 9.2 My HB was last year 8.7 but Ferritin was never checked before now. Can this be due to the infection as there was a cough (acute protein reaction) while my CRP is normal? How does ferritin act in case of a normal infection and does it low down quickly ? How does the CRP act? goes high quickly and reduces quickly? One more information: During the 3 weeks before test, I had so much stress and anxiety that I didnt eat well. I still am very worried about my health while I feel in top condition. Not tired.. my condition is very good or excellent. Thanks for your time. Regards. XXXXXX

Brief Answer: Please provide your blood works reports... Detailed Answer: Hi, I have gone through your medical history carefully. Before running into final conclusions, I want to have a look to your lab results myself. The data you are providing are very strange to me; however, I should have a look to other parameters to say the last words. Usually, Ferritin level is increasing during an infection associated with increased CRP level. However, I should take a look to the other parameters to judge over your CRP levels. Thank you! Please find the report uploaded My gp advised another test after 3 months but he told me to not be worried at all.. I am a West Asian if this can help Does ferritin react on stress? Or anxiety? How does it increase with alcohol ? Because if it's increased from my alcohol intakes during last year then gamma gt should be high as well , if I am right. And if it was due to a cold or virus infection ( the cough ) does ferritin act and go very high and slowly lower? Or the same as crp? How does crp acts ? I have one more information. I have fungal nails after a long duration fungal infection on my left foot.. 4 nails are infected. Could this be something which effects ferritin? Please help me doctor as suffer now from anxiety about thins condition...

Brief Answer: Chronic fungal infection& alcohol as cause.. Detailed Answer: Hi back XXXXXXX Thank you for following up. There are 2 main causes to high ferritin levels, including: - chronic inflammation/infection - drinking alcohol. You are reporting to be suffering of a chronic nail infection and do consume alcohol on regular basis. Furthermore, you have been also diagnosed with fatty liver. All of them have influenced in increasing ferritin levels. I highly suggest to : - stop drinking alcohol - get your fungal infection properly treated - try to control stress - repeat test as per your doctor's recommendation Hope it answered to your queries! Dr.Klerida Do not hesitate to contact me again if you have further questions! I'd be glad to assist you further!

Thanks for your answer doctor. If my nail fungal infection is the reason, then why is crp so low? ( the infection started in the foot.. Lasted for Long before It was treated but I was too late cause my nails were already infected. So the foot infection is healed but the nails aren't treated yet). My gp didn't recommend treating my fungal nails as the meds are heavy for the liver and it requires lots of monitoring. I'm thinking to treat them by laser. My fatty liver was probably due to my high gamma gt that time (it was only 85) because of my diet and lifestyle. Once I reduced the gamma gt to normal values, I thought I might have resolved the fatty liver..but I never had an ultrasound to check. does that remain in you opinion? ( it was slightly mild fatty liver). They told me also that stress and anxiety can cause infection like reaction and would increase ferritin and decrease ( a little ) the hb value which fits in my situation. Could it also be my cough which was not shown on crp as infection? Like a light virus? Does ferritin go low quickly and go up quickly as well? Do you have information about this? I will try to attach a photo of my nail fungal for evaluation if needed. Sorry in advance for the picture of nails Have you checked also my report and all looked ok and no need to be this worry about this elevation of ferritin and low hb? I will try to have an iron rich diet.. Will eat More meet than fish and chicken and also eat enough vitamin C as my low hb might be die the dight.. What do you think?

Brief Answer: Following answers to your queries... Detailed Answer: Hi back, Sorry for the late reply due to system problems. You are reporting to frequently use alcohol in weekends. Fatty liver is due to alcohol consumption. The damages caused to liver due to alcohol and fatty issues are causing increased gama GT levels. It is true that avoiding drinking alcohol and following a healthy diet have also improved fatty liver. Usually, such improvements will be notable after 3 to 6 months of starting such changes. With regards to stress/anxiety, it is true that it can increase the levels of ferritin and alters other body's parameters. Every type of infection can be associated with increased ferritin. At your case, the most probable cause is the prolonged fungal infection. Ferritin is the body's store for iron. Its levels cannot get down quickly as long as the infection or other factors (alcohol, stress) are still present. I have gone through the reports you sent. Everything seems normal to me, apart slightly elevated ferritin levels. At this point, I advise to continue following the healthy diet and lifestyle regimen. There is no need to take extra iron or increase foods high in iron or folic acid. I repeat again, your ferritin levels is increased not due to increased intake of dietary iron, but due to its high consumption during an infection or using alcohol. Hope it answered to your queries! Again, sorry for the late reply due to system problems I was facing these days. Thank you for your patience! Dr.Klerida

Brief Answer: Treat nail infection first, then Hb will be normal Detailed Answer: Hi back XXXXXXX Thank you for following up. Apart diet changes, to my opinion, if you get your fungal infection correctly treated, the HB will be back to normal again. Furthermore, the anti-fungal therapy will cause slightly decrease in Hb. Once the infection is entirely treated and no anti-fungal drug will be inside your body, your Hb will be back to normal again. All the best! Dr.Klerida
