Do Bloating And Pain Along With Blood In Stool Indicate Colon Cancer?

Question: Hi,

Couple of weeks back I had food poisoning after eating out, I had loose motion and pain in my stomach. The doctor gave me an nexsium injection, nexpro D and Vibact. The pain reduces within couple of hours and I was good in a day.

For the past two weeks I have been continuosly eating out, I feel that my stomach swells up after eating and I am not able to pass gas or not feel hungry for the next meal. But I am able to eat well and more. There is no pain in stomach but my urge to go shit has increased, I do not feel that I have completely cleared my bowel. Couple of days back I had once a streak of blood in stool, I sometime have due to fissure.

Its like the whole day I am feeling my stomach bloated, i again visited the doc and same treament was given. I searched the internet and I am little worried if it is some thing very serious like stomach or colon cancer , or it is just GERD. Please clarify my doubts and suggest what medication is best for now.

Note : I am a regular drinker and smoker.

Brief Answer:
Please find details below

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Earlier your doctor gave you medication containing Esomeprazole which is present in both Nexium and Nexpro D. This is a medicine to reduce secretion of gastric acid and has worked for you.

2. As you are a regular drinker and smoker, slightly reducing your habit might give you benefit and reduce your bloating symptom.

3. Since you have been eating outside food for more than two weeks, it is possible that you are having indigestion. Outside food can be unhealthy and you must choose your food carefully. Please avoid spicy food and make it a habit of taking juices and fruits regularly.

4. Early in the morning you can start with breakfast including something like idly which is a healthy food and available commonly in south XXXXXXX Also avoid over eating and skipping meals. Also take curds after taking spicy meals to reduce gastric irritation. That also causes increased gastritis symptoms. Drink lots of water and fresh juices during the day.

5. As you are aware of cancer in the stomach and digestive tract, it will help to get an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and an ultrasound scan abdomen to know if there is any other problem in the stomach and abdomen causing your bloating.

6. You can ask your doctor to give you further 15 days of Esomeprazole and take it on empty stomach as recommended.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
