Do Alcoholic Have Huge Urge To Roam Around After Drinking?

Question: Does alcoholic have huge urge to roam around drunken...??
My father is an alcoholic for the past 20 years and we are getting treatments for my dad from many deaddiction centres for the past 6 years but nothing worked. He could stay without drinking for a maximum of 2 or 3 weeks only.. He gets very aggressive after this period and even beats me when i dont let him to drink.. But there is one drinking pattern which we observed for the past 20 years.
"Drinking 24*7 and will roam around in many places being drunken... Though we have no relatives in these places he will just roam around in many cities get drinks from TASMAC shops, sleep in the roads and will return home after 2 or 3 weeks when he is literally about to die, And there are times we allowed him to drink at home(Just to save him from all the physical injuries he gets by falling in the streets or getting hit by vehicles) but still he wants to go out and drink.. It seems he feels satisfied only by roaming in streets being drunken"..
Does he have any other psychological problem because of which he wants to roam around drunken or is this because of alcoholism? Please help me here..

Brief Answer:
I think no

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sathiya,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

From the available description there is clear evidence that your father suffers with personality disorder (most probably schizotypal) which are responsible for aimless wandering to the extent of two to three weeks.

Wandering may found in alcoholism but not to the extent which is present in your father.

In my view your father should be treated in patient deaddiction ward and never as an OPD patient. If required he may be kept in the hospital for two to three months provided such facility available in your city.

I hope this answers your question.
Thanks and regards

Hello Doctor,

Thanks for your reply..
Is it possible that because of this personality disorder the earlier deaddication treatments were unsuccessful?? My dad still doesnt accept that he has drinking problems which need to be treated & also he strongly believes that these medical treatments will not help him quit drinking..

Can you please let me know what are the treatments available to treat this personality disorder?? Also should we treat this first before going for next inpatient deaddiction treatment? ?

Brief Answer:
Failure in deaddiction treatments is rule rather than exception

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sathiya,
Thanks for reverting back to me.

It is not possible to comment how the treatment failed in previous attempt but possibility of personality disorder could be likely reason as patients with substance abuse and personality disorders need more stringent effort in compare to other patients.

In addition I like to make it clear that failure in deaddiction programs is rule rather than exception. It is well established fact that almost half of alcoholics resume drinking in few months.

It is possible that personality component was not diagnosed as little is available in XXXXXXX setting fro treatment of personality disorder. But it will be appropriate for the family members and treating team to consider all elements while taking him under treatment. The treatment can be provided at same time along with deaddiction treatment.

Hope I am able to answer your concerns.
