Question: Hi I am XXXXXXX (age 27) from Delhi, India. I am a software engineer. My height is 165 cm and weight 48 kg. I came in Delhi in 2006 since then I am having problem in digesting heavy food. Whenever I eat some fatty/oily/spicy food for 1-2 days I start having loose motion and gas problem with pain in stomach. Even I am not able drink milk or take any high protein food. If I take simple, non spicy and non oily food I feel good but if I take any of these stuff for 1-2 day, I start having loose motion with pain in stomach. I consulted some allopathic doctors first and had urine, stool, TB and ultrasound tests, but all the reports were normal. Then I consulted a homeopathic doctor, as long as I was taking homeopathic medicine I had no problem but after completion of the course I again started having same problem. For last 5 months I am taking some ayurveda medicine but again if I stop taking medicine, after sometime problem surfaces again. When I shifted to Delhi I carried some heavy stuff with me, some people say that it may have caused some problem. I also read on some blogs that lifting heavy stuff may cause some stomach related problems. Please help me to get rid of the problem, any suggestion would be appreciated.

Dear XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Thanks for posting your query.

I can totally understand the pain that you have. Some gastrointestinal problems are frustrating at times. In today's era of fast life and stress this problems have increased so you are not alone suffering from problem like this.

What you might possibly have is a condition known as "Irritable Bowel Syndrome", ofcourse it is diagnosis of exclusion. This means the examination and tests are not pointing to any particular cause hence the last diagnosis made. In this condition typical symptoms that you have are common. Some have diarrhea or some have constipation. In this condition apart from drugs, anxiety and stress plays a very important roll.

Please avoid provocative foods that you know,do regular exercise.Plan your diet properly, take regular small meals at a time, avoid fasting and over eating.Take proper sleep. You can even try yoga and meditation which is at times very useful.

As far as medicines are concerned please get in touch with a Gastroenterology, who will guide you. In this condition there are times when this goes off completely means symptoms free periods do come. Do not worry, but please do not experiment with your self with different medicines.

One more clarification lifting of weight has nothing do with your problem.

The problem is a known and treatment is more of life style medication.

I hope things are clear now, still if you have something more to ask,I will be available for follow up.Bye and take care.

Thanks Dr. Pragnesh for your reply.
It would be helpful if you suggest about
- what kind of exercise or yoga will be beneficial for me.
- I want to gain some weight(as I am very skinny), but as mentioned earlier I am not even able to take milk. So what kind of other stuff can I take in order to do so.

Dear XXXXXXX

Good to see your back.

The best thing would be take help of yoga instructor who can guide you properly. One should not practice without direct observation at least for initial days.As far as exercise is concerned walking is the best thing you can do. Avoid vigorous exercise ,but regular exercise is good and beneficial. For building muscle mass aerobics are also good.

Simple mantra is frequent high calorie and nutritious snacking will increase calorie intake and thus help in weight gain. These include all nuts, mayonneise, dried seeds, milk shakes.

Milk is a good source of nutrition but it is not the only source.Try having more fibers in your diet like fruits ,vegetables, salads etc.You can take a portion of dry fruits every day that will help a lot.Have daily break fast with fruits and then have something like juice, butter milk, salad in between meals. Do not skip meals. If you are comfortable with you can take peanuts and chana in small portion, which are good source of nutrition.

Hope this helps.
