Hi,

Thank you for posting in your query

I gather from your question that your father is a Diabetic and on medication and you need to know about diet in diabetes.

I would like to have some more information before I could help you with the details that you ask for.

How long has your father been a diabetic?
Which medications is he on?
Does he suffer from any other illnesses like high blood pressure, heart disease?
What is his height and weight?
What are his activity levels?

Following are some advise that I would like to give:

Get his Sugars and HbA1C levels evaluated every 3 months
Get his annual blood tests done which include CBC (Complete blood count), Lipid profile, Kidney function
Get his Urine analysis and Urine microalbuminuria done annually
Get his eye test done annually
He must were comfortable footwear and take adequate foot care

He should restrict direct sugar intake and products with high sugar levels
He should take 5-6 portions of fruit or vegetables each day. He must avoid Mango, Sapota, Grape, Date and Sugarcane
He must restrict his carbohydrate intake i.e avoid rice, processed flour, potato, sweet potato. Try to incorporate whole wheat in diet

He must carry out moderate exercise 20 mins/day, 5 days and week

I would be able to help you better once I get some clarification on the information I seek

Awaiting your response,

Regards,

Dr Gowri
