Hi XXXXXX,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Your child is having diarrhea and it seems to be a viral gastroenteritis.

The drinking of more water and tiredness is due to the presence of some dehydration due to thirst.

The mainstay of treatment is to maintain hydration.

You can give oral rehydration solutions (ORS) like Pedialyte, coconut water, and lemon water to correct the dehydration.

Keep on giving ORS till her hydration improves.

Hydration should be monitored by the following parameters:

1. Activity

2. Adequate urine output

3. Skin turgor

4. Moisture of tongue and oral cavity.

Probiotic like lactobacillus or saccharomyces sachets can be given one or two sachets per day orally for 3 to 5 days to restore the normal intestinal flora with the doctor prescription.

At home you can give curd and yogurt as they contain probiotic.

Zinc supplementation for two weeks will help to decrease the watery content of stool and prevents recurrent diarrhea.

The stool test is normal except for its consistency and the presence of reducing substance.

You can stop milk for now as the reducing substance in stool is positive and start milk once the stool becomes normal completely.

Nothing to worry as the today stool is normal.

Therefore I advise you to give ORS and consult your Pediatrician for the assessment of her hydration status and for the prescription of medication including probiotic and zinc.

Hope I have answered your query, if you have any clarification please let me know.

Regards.
