Can You Get Periods And Be Pregnant At The Same Time And What Is Average Raise Of BBT During Ovulation?

default
Posted on Wed, 10 Jul 2013
Question: Hi,
I have heard that you can not get your period from the time you get pregnant. I have couple friends who swear they had their period fully for their first trimester. I want to know if you can get period and be pregnant. If yes, would you bleed only or you can pass clots as well(TMI sorry )?
can you get your period, be pregnant and still your Hcg hormone is not high enough to be shown in a home pregnancy test?
what will be the average raise of BBT and is it be higher than your ovulation time temperature or below that?

Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for posting your query.

It is impossible for somebody to be pregnant and have periods.

Let’s discuss the basics,

Normal menstruation takes place under the influence of hormones estrogen and progesterone.

In mid cycle the egg release from the ovary.

If the egg becomes fertilized by a sperm and attaches itself to the uterine wall, the woman becomes pregnant.

If pregnancy does not occur, estrogen and progesterone levels drop and the thickened lining of the uterus is shed during the menstrual period.

In case of pregnancy, Human chorionic gonadotrophin or hCG-is formed inside the body by products of conception .This hormone is made after the egg is fertilized and its levels rise rapidly in early pregnancy. It acts to support progesterone, a hormone necessary to maintain the pregnancy.

So having period during pregnancy is out of question.

BBT is not the reliable method to diagnose pregnancy. Elevated BBT even after 15 days of ovulation and missed period indicated possibility of pregnancy.

What your friends might be talking about is spotting in first trimester, those occasional drops of blood.

This happens in early pregnancy where there is deficiency of hormones. This condition needs to be looked carefully to avoid abortion.

I hope this helps and clarifies your concern.

Wishing you good health.

Thanks for the prompt answer.

How long after Ovulation the conception occurs and how long after conception you start getting nauseous by the level of HCG hormone in your blood?
Is it possible you get negative test result on the first day of your period and still be pregnant?
I have spent so much money on the tests during the past few months and I am looking for other inexpensive way of detecting the pregnancy than by testing it. For instance if the clots should not be passed so no test needed!
I would like to know that how long after ovulation you can take the test(Urine or Blood) and what will be the first symptom of HCG hormone rise?

Sorry of asking so many questions but I have one last question; there are some inexpensive ovulation test in the market, are they reliable by detecting the exact date of ovulation or not?

Thanks

Hi,

Good to hear from you again.

Normally after ovulation the egg stays in tube for about 3-4 days, if it gets fertilized then starts moving towards uterus and gets implanted in uterus in a day.

HCG which is produced by the placenta and enters the blood soon after implantation and is detected with pregnancy tests. HCG is being produced by the placenta and enters the blood stream as soon as implantation happens, about one week after fertilization and ovulation, when the embryo implants and the placenta attaches to the uterine lining.

In urine the HCG can be detected after about 1-5 days of missed period.

Urine pregnancy test is a reliable and cost effective method. There is no need to test blood every time. Again said everything, the objective sign of pregnancy is detection of fetal heart rate on ultrasound which is normally seen at about 6-7 weeks of pregnancy.

In case of your periods are regular you can use various tools available online which can predict the date of ovulation for you.

Apart from this normally ovulation takes place in middle of the cycle, you can count your fertile days from +2 or -2 from the mid cycle.

You can use ovulation detection test kit available in the market. Normally the kit works well.

BBT as you were asking is another method.

Please relax, discuss with your doctor and browse around to solve your queries.

I hope this helps,

Dr.Pragnesh
