Can Working Night Shift Cause Depression?

Question: Hi,

I am doing night shift. so every morning i feel depressed before going to sleep. But after waking up i feel good and enjoy work environment in office. Also i sleep wee everyday around 8hrs. Please advise me as i feel low and can't concentrate on other work during weekends when i be having off day.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

First of all I like to inform you that your experience is completely normal and there is nothing wrong with feeling bad before sleeping time after night shift.

Although I will recommend you to not to meddle with nature and do work at least after four hours of sleep on weekends but in case that it not possible you can do following.

1. Have two cups of coffee early in morning and that will help you to elevate your mood for at least next three to four hours.
2. Go for exercise of at least 30-45 minutes after completing your shift
3. Take plenty of water during night shift to keep fatigue away


In case these three simple things do not help you we can think of medication but as I suggested medication is last option.
