Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for writing to HCM,
I have gone through your query.

Tonsils are lymphoid tissue (part of our own immune system ). But they do not have any use after childhood as the body takes up its own care and the other immune system gets developed to such an extent that we do not need tonsils.

Polyp is a edematous mucosa ie collection of fluid in the inner skin or mucosa.

As there can be no collection of fluid in tonsil so there can not be polyp on tonsil.
Yes there can be tonsillar enlargement or growth on it or sometimes the tonsils are such that one part of tonsil looks like a extra growth .

The other part is that if you have big tonsils, which are worrying you , you can get them removed by surgery .
This operation will give relief in sore throat, snoring ,voice change etc.
And most importantly you can get the removed part biopsied and know that by tissue diagnosis what is it.

I hope to have answered , in doubt do reply.

Brief Answer:
better is tonsillectomy

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I think you have a vascular malformation a hemangioma or lymphangiomatous lesion , which is told to you as a polyp.
If so then the treatment for it is surgery.
It is better that Tonsils are removed in the same surgery as there could be chances of recurrence or extra bleed during the surgery.
As the blood vessel which is supplying the lesion is coming from the tonsil and its bed.
If the lesion and the tonsils are removed in total then it is better.
In doubt do reply.

Brief Answer:
Are they doing surgery in local anaesthesia??

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
If it is vascular lesion then you need to close the bed of the vascular supply, or burn the base of the lesion , otherwise the bleeding will occur.
We have done similar case and removed the tonsil in total.
It is better to remove tonsil when you are giving general anaesthesia. why to leave any chance of re-bleeding.
Are they doing surgery in local anaesthesia??

Brief Answer:
better to remove tonsil

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
If general anaesthesia then its better to remove whole tonsil.
If there is a vascular lesion developed out of the tonsil then again it could develop from it as the blood supplying vessel is still there and only one end will be burnt . I think they will cauterise it or coablate the end of the vessel to stop the bleeding.
If so then there are chances of regrowth and bleeding.
And tonsil surgery would give a permanent treatment. and then histopathological or tissue diagnosis of the whole tonsil can be done.
It is my view and many other doctors also as we had four such patients and we did tonsillectomy.

What we think is that due to irritation like due to food material or recurrent increase in size due to some infection such type of lesion come up. It does not make sense to remove a single lesion and leave the whole tonsil. As the tonsil is still there and chances of recurrence will then still be there. And tonsillectomy is a very safe surgery .

Do reply in doubt
