Posted on Wed, 22 Nov 2017
Question: Every time I go to a doctors office my blood pressure goes up to 170/105 is his harmful! Can hat rupture something? I know I have anxiety sometimes..at home my blood pressure stays close to normal..I also have higher pulse that stays with me all the time..I check it on the oxymeter .. Sometimes my oxygen level is at 95 too.. Is stress doing this to me? Cause I have had a lot of that lately! My cholesterol has even been high at 203-220..can stress raise that too? I do not want to be on statins can I lower it with exercise and weight loss? I have a bmi at 28... It causes me stress to take meds? How do I know if it is stress or heart problems?

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

1. A blood pressure of 170/105 is not harmful, especially if it only happens in a doctor's office

2. Oxygen level at 95 is a normal reading

3. Stress cannot raise cholesterol

4. I would talk with your doctor about exercise and diet prior to trying a statin, but oftentimes diet and exercise is not enough, and statins are very safe and effective medications

5. I don't see any evidence of heart problems

Detailed Answer:
Stress can raise the CRP but by very small amounts. A natural way to control stress is through therapy, weekly cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) preferred.
