Posted on Mon, 7 Apr 2014
Question: Hi, I am male, 29 years. I had oral sex with condom last week. it lasted only for 1 minute and i stopped. I believe there was no skin contact. after taking out the penis, i masturbated outside. Still i have so much of fear whether there could be any chances of STD? Also, please let me know after how many days should i get the tests done to rule out the possibility? What all tests should i perform? Please suggest me the tests to be done and where i can perform in bangalore, India.

Brief Answer: do not worry now Detailed Answer: Hello and welcome to HCM, I understand your query. Since you have used a condom the risk of having STD is greatly reduced. So do not worry so much. The common infections are chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, syphilis, HPV, Hepatitis B, Herpes, other bacterial infections and yeast infection. It is not possible to test all at one go and some like HPV cannot be tested easily. Some tests test the body's immune response or defense against the organism like the tests for HIV. It takes time foe the body to mount a response so these tests must be taken after 3 months. The tests can be had at any reputed laboratory like Dr reddys or at any big hospital like apollo. Even a pathology next door offers the tests as all samples are mostly sent to a central lab. Some test require the collection of swabs from the affected area like the penis, so you will need to visit a doctor for that if the technician in the lab does not do it. Any STD clinic or a skin clinic will do. The specific tests that would most likely be done are 1. collection of a swab using a swab stick [ similar to the johnsons ear bud will be touched to the penile urethra] and sent in a sterile container for gram stain and culture. Organisms like chlymydia, gonococci, any bacteria will be detected in this. This can be done now. A KOH mount of the same will look for yeast infections. 2. Blood tests will be done after 3 months testing for HIV, hepatitis B, syphilis. 3. A urine test for microscopy and culture to look for infection. Can be done now. Please do understand that unprotected sex or even protected sex with multiple partners and non natural sexual practices carry a high risk of transmitting diseases. The best prevention is practicing monogamy. So stay safe and take care. As of now do not worry as the contact was for a brief time and was protected. Hope this satisfies your query. Dear Dr. XXXXXXX Thanks for the response. This had relieved me to a large extend. Shall i believe that the chances of any infections are reduced to a large possible extend considering the protective method and the shortest duration? Also, please let me know whether i should directly go to a lab or should i consult a doctor, get the tests prescribed and then go to the lab. If I need to meet a doctor, could you please suggest some right contact in Bangalore? Also, could you plesae specifically name the tests? Thanks, XXXX

Brief Answer: risk is very low. Detailed Answer: Hello XXXX and welcome back, Yes the chances are greatly reduced by use of condom. So do not worry. The tests are 1. Urethral swab for gram stain and culture. 2. Anti HIV antibody [ ELISA] done after 3 months 3. Anti HBS Ag done after 3 months 4. VDRL for syphilis. Done after at least a month 4. Urine microscopy and culture. So now you need only 2 tests now: a urethral swab and urine culture with microscopy. You can go directly to the lab and tell them these tests and they will do it. Just ask them on phone if they collect the urethral swabs. Most of them do as it is a very simple procedure. If they do it is fine or you may need to see a doctor first if they do not do it. You may visit a doctor if you want but if there are no symptoms like fever, urethral discharge, pain or burning in urine, there is no need as of now. A doctor in Bangalore. Unfortunately I do not know any one specific but you may visit any of the hospitals like apollo, mallaya, XXXXXXX or fortis near you and see a STD specialist. Personally as of now I do not feel there is a need. If you go to these hospitals you can see a doctor and get the tests done at one place. Any practising physician near you who is MD medicine may also help you as this is not a major issue. Hope this has helped you. Here are phone numbers of some labs. Brief Answer: Do not worry. You will be fine. Detailed Answer: Hello and welcome, The only thing that you need to look for now is if you have any discharge from the urethra or fever, pain or increased frequency of micturition or burning in urine. If these are there you must see a doctor as soon as possible. Other wise there is no urgency. If these are not there, you will be fine. Please do not worry. The risk is very low and you have used a barrier. Come out of the anxiety and enjoy your day. Your test will most likely be negative. Hope this answered the query. I am always here to help.
