Posted on Mon, 28 Apr 2014
Question: Hello, I am 50 years old female in good health. I had a period January 3 for 7 days and just light spotting in February, and a few days heavier spotting in mid March. I have no signs of pregnancy and my husband has a vasectomy. My breasts are not sore no other symptons and I had twin boys 22 years ago. However, my friend recently got pregnant (age 42) unexpectedly and her husband also had a vasectomy. It turned out it failed many many year later and it was confirmed. I took an EPT test which showed negative but am worried . Am I just hitting menopause?

Brief Answer: likely perimenopause Detailed Answer: Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic It is understandable to be concerned. Pregnancy tests however, are very accurate and home pregnancy tests can effectively detect pregnancy 11 to 14 days after conception. It is likely that you are in perimenopause. This is the stage right up to menopause when the period stops completely. It can last up to years in some women and lasts only months in others. Menopause is defined as no periods for at least a year. Perimenopause is associated with a range of changes including changes to the menstrual cycle. It can become lighter and/or irregular. If you wish to confirm that you are in this stage you may want to consider a blood tests for hormonal levels at your doctor's office. This is not necessarily needed but it may give you peace of mind. I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
