Can Gas And Bloating Cause Irregular Heartbeat?

default
Posted on Wed, 20 Sep 2017
Question: Hello Doctor,
I get heart palpitations due to gas or over eating and due to this I can't sleep even if I m sleepy. As soon as all the gas is expelled out either by farting or pooping I sleep. This takes a lot of time, some nights I m awake till 4 am. Can I sleep like other people who eat anything they want and sleep even if they have gas as all my family members get gas but still they don't get heart palpitations and sleep easily. Is my heart very near to my stomach. How can I stop the palpitations even if I get gas. I have eliminated a lot of food items from my menu and can't delete more,so better stop the palpitations some other way.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that your symptoms could be related to hiatal hernia or gastro-esophageal reflux.

For this reason, I would recommend consulting with your attending physician for a careful physical exam and some tests:

- a chest X ray study
- a fibrogastroscopy
- an abdominal ultrasound and pancreatic enzymes (lipase and amylase) levels are also necessary to exclude a pancreas dysfunction.

Some tips would help improve your situation:

- eating in small portions frequently during the day
- avoiding spicy food
- avoid eating before sleeping. You can try to eat your last meal earlier (at six or seven o clock ) and use an antiacid before sleep in order to reduce the hunger sensation and also the stomach pressure.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
