Question: I've had mid back pain for two days and doubt very much that ti is muscular. Can it be related in any way to my carotid artery disease?

Brief Answer:
I think that chances of the pain being associated with CAD are low

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. The only 2 possibilities I can think of with CAD and back pain are:

1. When with CAD, there is heart failure; it results in fluid build up around your lungs, that can first cause shortness of breath and then back pain (mid back mainly). So unless you are suffer from shortness of breath, I think we can rule this cause out

2. The cramping-like or squeezing pain that you feel in your chest region due to CAD, can also be felt in the back region, but mainly in the upper and mid back. But this isolated pain in only the back almost never appears in an isolated manner and presents with other symptoms as well.

So in my opinion the cause is most likely to be independent of your CAD, and possibly associated with causes like degenerative disease of the spine. arthritis, osteoarthritis, disc prolapse, renal impairment, physical trauma, etc.

I hope I have explained things in a manner best understood by you. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help.

Best wishes.

I have COPD -- as I'm always short of breath, it's hard for me to tell if anything else is going on. I am being treated with two inhalers and nite time oxygen. Is this helpful or paranoia?

Brief Answer:
COPD is the most plausible explanation right now

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

The pain can be associated with the COPD, and this seems like the most plausible cause and explanation. The phrenic nerves are effected and can easily result in pain.

I do understand your cause for concern and even paranoia (if it is actually getting to that), but I do not think the CAD is the cause here ma'am. But for your satisfaction, why don't you go about a complete check and put your mind and heart to rest.

Please do not hesitate to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help.

Best wishes.
