Can Alcoholics Take Ativan?

Question: My husband is an alcoholic and is very depressed. He was taking Zoloft but has been changed to Ativan. He is also Type II diabetic. He is currently taking per day clonidine .2 mg, diltiazem 180mg ex, lovastatin 80 mg, metoprolol 100 mg, Glucovance 2.5/500 2x day. He is drinking and extremely depressed. Can/should he take the Ativan? Thank you for your help.
