Can A Broken Needle In Vein Flow To Heart And Lung?

default
Posted on Fri, 13 Jun 2014
Question: Hi.
After reading the article about the broken needle in vein, I got the phobia for the vein circulation.
If I got wound from glass or broken wood, I image that some particles get into my vein and block or flow to the lung or heart.
Of course If I have the medical knowledge, I could understand that it is very hard to get into the vein and if it enter into, it is very hard to flow to heart and lung.
Would you pls. tell me why it is very hard to flow.
Some doctor says that the particle could flow to the heart. and the other says that it is impossible to travel so far distance to heart or lung.
Pls. explain me the which one is right and why. Thx.

Brief Answer:
it all depends on the size and shape of particle

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to HCM.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

Though it is very very rare for a foreign particle to enter into a vein, its not unreported. This is due to the fact that the size of veins at the skin is very very very small and there are various other tissues in the way between to prevent the foreign body from entering inside a vein, like dermis, fat, connective tissues, the vessel wall.

Still if bypassing all these defences a particle manages to reach inside it can continue to flow forward only if it has a spherical or round shape. If its of an irregular shape it will get stuck at some point in the vessel lumen at the various valves or the bends.

And if its round in shape and manages to flow and reach the heart, and will subsequently be pumped into the lung. But stills there is no cause to worry as the size of that particle is too tiny too cause any harm eccept for blocking a single tiny vessel in the lung, an effect which will not be of any significance to the body which has millions of similar small blood vessels in the lung, so loss of one will be of no effect.

Hope I have answered your query . If any further queries are there I would love to help.

Regards,
Dr.Deepika Patil.
