Can Seroquel Be Taken During Pregnancy?

Question: I take 100mg of seroquel nightly for chronic insomnia. I do not suffer from depression or mental disease. But I do need help sleeping and will ultimately lower the dose. Can this drug be taken during pregnancy?

Seroquel is quetiapine.
This drug belongs to FDA category C.
That means that the risk to babies cannot be ruled out.
Animal studies have shown evidence of toxicity but for obvious reasons, there are inadequate human studies on this.
The drug is not recommended for use in pregnant women.
The dose does not matter, at the minimum intended dose, it is known to be associated with risks to the fetus.
If you are planning a pregnancy, it is best to talk to your psychiatrist and work out alternative solutions.
