Can STD Be Contracted Through Unprotected Oral Sex?

default
Posted on Wed, 23 Dec 2015
Question: Hi, im a 23 year old male and 8 days ago I had intercourse with a female friend. We had protected sex however I recieved unprotected oral from her. A few days after the encouter i felt a burning a discomfort on the head of my penis. There are no sores, blisters, or discharge as far as i can tell. Theres just a burning sensation thats not overly painful and my foreskin is slightly red. Is it too early to be tested for an STD? Is there something specific you recommend i get tested for?

Brief Answer:
If symptoms are persistent then get tested for infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in to us.
Please find my observations below.

1. If you have burning in the head of the penis which is persistent then please get a urine culture and sensitivity and swab test from the urethra done. This will pick any infection which you have and it can be treated. This is a specific test for bacteria.

2. If the symptoms are not persistent then please wait and watch for some days and you can get tested for STDs after 30 day and by that time most infections will test positive if it is there.

3. It is probable that your symptoms are due to anxiety if the report is negative.

Hope your query is answered.
Please do write back if you have any doubts.

I forgot to mention that along with the burning i feel on my penis, i also feel light headed and quite tired. There is occasional pains as well in my groin area. Im considering going to my GP, but I was wondering if its a waste of time without having any visible signs of infection?

Brief Answer:
You can watch if symptoms persist for a week and then consult the GP

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. In most probability it can be from anxiety as you have had these symptoms in April 2015 also. At that time there was no progress of symptoms and your health returned to normal. In my opinion you can watch for a week and then consult the GP is symptoms persist and increase.

Hope your query is answered.

Hi, so its been nearly a week and the burning sensation has vanished. However, im currently experiencing flu like symptoms which are quite draining. Headache, sore throat and fatigue. Could this be connected to an STD? Theres still no discharge, lumps/bumps or anything like that. As I said my encounter was mostly protected apart from oral at the beginning. Is there any tell tale signs from a flu caused by STDs?

Brief Answer:
Flu from STDs is a rare probability

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. If you had protected vaginal sex and the oral in the beginning then such a flu like symptoms arising from a serious condition like HIV is unlikely.

2. It is probable that you are having a lot of anxiety which is giving physical symptoms or you are having the flu.

3. A sexual infection causing flu like symptoms without any genital or oral lesions is rarely seen. I think the headache, sore throat and fatigue can be from the flu due to weather changes. Please take precautions and you should recover in 7 to 10 days. You can do warm water gargle two times daily and if required then take an over the counter cough preparation to soothe your throat. Please have warm soups and liquids to clear your throat.

Hope your query is answered.

Would unprotected oral or kissing cause hiv? Flu 2 weeks after the encounter can be quite normal for hiv right? I dont want to spread it around if i have caught it. Its probably anxiety, but seeing as its too early to accuratly test i just want to be sure is all. Thanks

So most my symptoms seem to be improving today, flu is dissapearing and any burning or irritation around my groin area seems to be going, however i do feel some irritation from time to time.
I have noticed a small red rash about the size of a 20 cent coin on my inner thigh. Theres no bumps or anything it just burns a bit. Could this be the start of something?

Brief Answer:
The rash needs to be watched over next few days

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. If your symptoms are improving then it is likely the flu.

2. The rash needs to be observed for any changes over next few days. It can be an area of skin irritation. Please send a picture if possible.

3. Please watch for any new rashes in your groin area which can occur from days to weeks later with increase in burning sensation.

Hope your query is answered.

Hi, ive taken a photo of the rash on my thigh, its been there a few days and i havent noticed any change in it. Ive also started to get this itch on the underside of my tongue. The itch is on a raised milky color streak. It doesnt appear to be a blister, and there is no pain. This started late yesterday afternoon. Is it unlikely for herpes to break out on the tongue?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Vivek Chail (9 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Probably fungal infection needs to be ruled out by clinical evaluation

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. From the picture, it can be a fungal infection on your thigh. Please look out for the area to start itching or burning or itching and whether the rash is increasing in size.

2. I am not sure about the lesion on the underside of the tongue and probably that can be a fungal infection too.

3. It is suggested that you consult your doctor and get a clinical examination done for the rash on the thigh and under surface of tongue. Herpes causes intense burning followed by blisters. I guess you do not have the typical herpes symptoms.

Hope your query is answered.
