Can STD Be Contracted Through Protected Intercourse And Oral Sex?

Question: Hello,
I had protected sex with a sex worker about 2 weeks ago. I was really drunk and I did give her oral sex unprotected. (clitoral stimulation only). I had some burning on tip of penis, some testicle pain. No other signs or symptoms. I went to my urologist thinking it might have something to do with my vasectomy I had 11 months ago. They ran my urine and he said everything was normal. He diagnosed me with epididymitis and gave me antibiotics. The urine test was 6 days after my interaction. My question is, is 6 days long enough to wait before getting tested? And will the Tests be accurate after 6 days?

Hi,

6 days is not long enough to exclude all types of sexually transmitted diseases. I suggest to get screened again after couple of weeks. Reason- some infections would not symptomatic until few days.

As of now, based on the symptoms described by you, I do not suspect STDs.

I forgot to mention that I did have some swelling in my right testicle as well as a small bump (mass) inside. So my urologist recommended a testicular ultrasound...which came back normal as well. He ran the urine and said there was definitely no STD's that showed up in that test. So I was worried that the test for STD's 6 days after exposure was too soon. Im really stressed out. What are the chances the test would have given me a false negative?

Hi,

There would be some delay in the appearance of signs and symptoms of STD from the time of exposure. This is called window period. It varies from infection to infection, usually from 2 to 12 weeks.

Your doctor was right in diagnosing epididymitis, however, I think that this is unrelated to your sexual exposure but may have been present from before only.

So, I suggest to get a follow up done if you have any symptoms of any STD.

Thanks for all your help. I am 4 weeks post exposure today. I do not have any issues really, except that I have been really tired lately. But I have been staying up 2-3 hours later than my normal bed time. Here are my questions....

1. What is the likelihood that I contracted HIV from this encounter?
2. Has it been long enough to do an at home HIV test?

This time period varies widely from 4 to 12 weeks. However, more than 97% accuracy is reported if test is done after 12 weeks.

Unfortunately, there won't be very specific signs and symptoms during this initial even if there is HIV infection transmission.
