Herpes simplex virus (HSV 1 or 2 ) can be transmitted by oral sex or skin to skin contact or by kiss or as STDs. The chances are higher if there are active lesions at the time of contact.It depends whether the person had HSV infection.
They manifest as grouped vesicles(water filled lesions) with pain/ burning/itching.They can be asymptomatic and recurrent.
Just dryness do not suggest herpes.It can be simple respiratory infection due to respiratory contact with any person.

Thanks for the quick reply, I have no visible sores or lesions. My lips are just dry, purple and sore. similar to when you get cold. Im just worried thats all. how long usually does it take if you do catch the virious for sores or lesions to appear?
