Question: I have heavy upper respiratory congestion. I spent last night in the local Pres ER. The Doctor was able to give me some relief and a few hours sleep for the first time in days. I was send home and told to take sudafed and lots of water. The sudafed seems to really dry me out and it harder to cough up phlem. Can I take an over the counter like Mucinex DM along with the sudafed?

Brief Answer:
Yes you can take mucinex DM.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,

Thanks for posting your query on HCM.

Yes Sudafed can dry secretions which may be difficult to cough out. Yes you may take mucinex DM which loosens the secretions which can then be coughed out easily. You may also take nebulization with levolin and also drink plenty of water and warm beverages. Also these will help in liquifying the phlegm and coughing it out.

Take care.

Sometimes I start wheezing and it becomes difficult to draw a breath. I was also prescribed an inhaler, albuterol 90 mcg. I thought they were for people with asthma used to open clogged airways. Are they also effective for my condition? The doctors here are very shorthanded and they have no time to sit and answer my questions.

Brief Answer:
You may use albuterol inhaler for symptomatic relief.

Detailed Answer:

Yes albuterol is used for asthma. You could be having mild intermittent asthma since you have been prescribed albuterol in the past. Sometimes even in normal individuals the airways may become hypersensitive after a bout of cold or any other infection and these inhalers may be prescribed for symptomatic relief. You may take the inhaler and you will feel better.
