Posted on Tue, 29 Nov 2016
Question: Dear doctor,
I had 5 times protected sex from October 25-27. Condom did not break as soon as I know. The only risk factor was that I realized after sex that my skin bleeding right above the nail . Tiny damage possibly I get when fixing nails. I barely touched her vagina upper side , didn't put my finger in but I feel the moisture from vagina on my hand. In November 2 I started feeling tired , sneezing , coughing and runny nose. What is my risk from this exposure?
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Depends on different factors, the risk seems low.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Are you sure that the girl was carrying STDs (sexually transmitted infections), are you just presuming?
The exposure to the area is very short and possibly very less time to transmit infections. So the duration of exposure is also important.
Since you barely felt the vagina but the tiny damage is towards the dorsal aspect of the finger near the nail, there is no chance of contact of the vaginal mucosa and its fluids to the broken skin.
The current set of symptoms could be due to any viral illness not necessarily STD or HIV.
If you are doubtful, I suggest to get HIV DUO test done after 2 weeks of exposure.

Hope this answers.

Brief Answer:
Too low to be concerned

Detailed Answer:
I think it is low to be concerned.
To address your anxiety which can pester you long, I suggest to get the above test and it reveals how negligible is the risk.
The factors were duration of exposure, HIV positivity of the partner, broken skin or mucus membrane.
