Can Doxycycline Be Taken For MRSA?

default
Posted on Mon, 13 Jun 2016
Question: My daughter had an infection that tested positive as MRSA. She believes she got it from an exercise center. She went to the doctor and they prescribed a 13 day antibiotic regimen. The infection visibly seemed to go away after around 8 days and then she had an allergic reaction to the medicine and broke out in hives literally all over her body. The doctors had her quit taking the antibiotic and put her on prednisone and antihistamines. The hives went away but then a few days later the infection came back and they are testing it again and have put her on Doxycycline. Is she getting the right treatment and how dangerous could this infection be? Thanks

YOur daughter contracted MRSA and was treated with an antibiotics but she developed an allergy to it. This is very common. She has since treated the allergy but now the infection has started again. They are currently treating her with doxycycline. This is the proper treatment. She is getting good care at this time.

MRSA is not a real dangerous bacteria. It just requires different antibiotics to control. For people in the community this is standard treatment. In closed environments like nursing homes and hospitals it is a bigger challenge because of the extra frequency of infections and the higher rate of more resistant bacteria. This is not the flesh eating bacteria you hear about in the news. MRSA is very common now and not as dangerous as the flesh eating bacteria. It can be treated and controlled with routine antibiotics
