I make doll furniture and frequently use spray paints outdoor. I have also done frequent sanding and have been exposed to much fine sawdust. I have been around these and have not used a mask.I have developed a nasty cough and chest pain. I was recently diagnosed with severe copd and have changes in my left upper lung via x-ray. I was prescribed 2 inhalers. I also quit smoking about 15 years ago. are there any studies or research that could give me info on my future health. I am a 60yo female. thanks

Thanks for posting the query on XXXXXXX After going through your query, I would like to comment the following:

1. You seem to have been diagnosed as a case of COPD. The risk factors in your case are occupational exposure to spray paint, sand dust exposure and previous history of smoking.

2. You need to get evaluated in details with a Pulmonologist.

3. Investigations that would be required are pulmonary function test and CT scan of the thorax.

4. Medications include oral medications as well as the inhalers (which you have been prescribed).

5. Future course of the disease will depend on the regularirty with which you take these medications and dust exposure if any has to be avoided hence forth.

6. The aim will be to slow down the declining lung function. Remember the lung function normally declines with age and in COPD patients the lung function which is already decrease, declines at a faster rate.

7. Since you are an ex smoker you can see by this graph as how smoking hampers the lung functions (Your graph line will be stopped at 45). Its good that you have already stopped smoking.

8. Also do consider flu and pneumococcal vaccinations in consultation with your doctor.

I hope I have answered your query. I will be glad to answer follow up queries if any.
Please accept my answer if you have no follow up queries.
