Question: Hi there,
we have 11 days old baby boy that was borne in 37 weeks and his birth weight was 2.37kg. Since we are at home and started on nearly full breast milk via bottle he developed sympotms of indigestions such as grunting noises during feeds or after, difficulty getting sleep and seems to be generally irritated. He feeds well and has lots of poo and he is gaining weight. We are burping him during the feed and after but that seems to help very little. We have bough Activated Dimethicon oral suspension - should we start to use it on regular basis and as his current weight is 2.47 kg - what is the dose?
Is there anything else that we can help him and also how long these symptoms will continue?
Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi,

Since your child had lower birth weight, some times, there can be GI disturbances initially.

This can be in form of grunting, regurgitation after feeds, hiccoughs, sleep disturbances.
Even, colic is more frequent in such babies.

First of all I must reassure that, there symptoms are temporary and usually subside as the child grows.
If the child is feeding well and gaining weight, there is no need to worry.
Also repeated motions are common in children. Up to 12 - 15 times/day are commonly seen and some pediatrician even reassure up to 20 times/day. Whats more important is that it should not very loose or watery when it can be due to infection. Since you are using bottle, I am sure you are properly boiling it before each use.

How long it takes for such symptoms to go.
Well, it usually takes about few weeks; approximately 6 - 8 weeks. And at 3 months even minor regurgitation stop.

Regarding Activated Dimethicone, its used to relieve child of GI disturbance. The usual dosage is 8 drops not more than thrice a day. However, you must consult your pediatrician if there is any specific recommendation for your child based o his clinical condition on examination.

Hope this answers your query.
