Indication of blood transfusion or iron transfusion depend upon many things like patient clinical status,level of hemoglobin,level of iron etc.
Immediate need of blood transfusion may be needed in accident case with lot of blood loss.It is needed for replenish blood loss to prevent hypoxia to patient.
Threshold for transfusion of red blood cells may be needed below hemoglobin level of 7 gm per/dl.
Main benefit of blood transfusion is immediate benefit to the patient.It may be considered as life saving.
Main drawback is risk of infection through blood and its products.
Whole blood transfusion or component of blood transfusion depend upon clinical status.

Intravenous iron is mainly indicated in iron deficiency,iron deficiency anemia,blood loss etc.
Its main benefit is that there are no chance of infection transmission.
Its main drawback is that its effect is not immediate.Hemoglobin level take time to increase.
