Are Swollen Tonsils 2-3 Weeks After Exposure Indicative Of HIV?

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Apr 2015
Question: hello I've been worried ever since having a one night stand with protection, but the protection split, and after a couple of minuets later i noticed and i stopped imminently. The day after i developed a cough and my left tonsil was hurting and my chest was wheezing but i was thinking it was too early to have symptoms. then 2-3 weeks after my tonsils were swollen and couldn't swallow or eat anything drinking was hard and they've been really hurting for a week now, and a couple of days after i developed a rash on my legs and my temperature was changing from cold to warm, then by the late stages my glands have swollen a bit you can't tell unless you feel them, and through looking on the internet it has really scared me is it possible i have HIV? or is it tonsillitis and I'm worrying too much by looking at the internet? is it too early to have that many symptoms that early? went to the doctor yesterday and she gave me penicillin and after a day of taking that its getting much better and the rash is going down with creme. I'm so scared though I am only 20.

Brief Answer:
symptoms would not occur so quickly

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The incubation period of an infection it the time from when a person is exposed to when symptoms are generally seen.

The incubation period of HIV is 2 to 4 weeks. Symptoms would not start the day after exposure.
The cough , sore throat, chest pain and rash are related to an acute upper respiratory tract infection (common cold).

Your symptoms are not related to HIV but to the this cough/ cold infection.

The initial stages of HIV may or may not be associated with symptoms.

Because however, you were exposed (condom broke), though you do not have HIV symptoms, you should still be screened for this and the other STIs (herpes, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomonas, hepatitis).

Summary: (1) incubation period of HIV is 2 to 4 weeks so your symptoms are not due to this infection
(2)should still be screened for this and other infections

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
