Are Mouth Dryness, Excessive Thirst And Sleeplessness Signs Of Diabetes?

default
Posted on Sat, 28 Oct 2017
Question: I had a cortisone injection in my shoulder on Wed. I've had extreme thirst ever since. I can barely sleep because my mouth is so dry & I'm so thirsty. I was diagnosed with low blood sugar in the past, but never have had diabetes. Could this be a sign of a sugar issue? Should I go to a doctor to get my sugars tested?

Brief Answer:
Get blood sugars checked

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I read through the query.
Cortisone injection can regulate blood sugar levels and it can cause multiple other side effects which can match to your symptoms. They act on multiple organs including pancreas and kidney where the latter is responsible for excess thirst and dryness. However mild to moderate doses would not last long. I am not sure how much was the dose but the symptoms that you experience newly would wane off sooner. Till then keep sipping water in a bottle. Take help with chewing gums especially at work. Ginger or lemon water can increase saliva production and keep the mouth moist. Do not breathe through mouth.
Meantime you can get the Fasting blood sugar test done.
